Elements of a Lesson
We have taken the research on explicit and effective vocabulary teaching and built this into a highly structured lesson format. All our lessons incorporate the elements of vocabulary teaching listed below:
1. Exploration of the structure of the word. The word parts, such as prefixes and roots. Break the word down into phonemes to aid spelling. Practise the pronunciation of the word.

2. Explore the Etymology: Study the origins of the word and its components. Make connections to other words that share similar roots.

3. Provide students with clear and student-friendly definitions, along with a sentence that demonstrates the word in context.
4. Deepen students' understanding of the word by exploring, synonyms, antonyms and idioms.
Original & varied tasks
5. Put new learning into practice through the completion of a variety of tasks.
6. Provide opportunities for discussion to support students' oracy and encourage students to use new vocabulary in context.
